Thermal impact of geothermal systems on the subsurface
Geothermal systems are no longer limited to providing heat for single-family homes. Increasingly larger installations are being used for geothermal energy extraction or geothermal heat storage. The amount of heat transferred during these processes can significantly impact the subsurface temperature. Flowing groundwater can carry these thermal anomalies beyond property boundaries, resulting in thermal plumes or cold fronts. Thermal simulations can provide insights into the extent of subsurface temperature changes and whether neighboring geothermal systems may be affected. Such simulations are often required by authorities during the permitting process, particularly for larger installations.
