Feasibility study on near-surface geothermal use through energy piles

As part of the planned extension of the subway line U4 in Hamburg, Thermulation GmbH conducted a comprehensive feasibility study on shallow geothermal energy. The objective was to assess the potential for utilizing energy piles for cooling technical facilities of the future Moldauhafen station, particularly considering the geological conditions on-site.

Activities of Thermulation GmbH:

  • Evaluation of thermophysical soil parameters and assessment of the efficiency of ground-coupled heat pumps.
  • Development of a cooling concept that incorporates geothermal usage through energy piles.
  • Approval examination: consideration of water law requirements and other regulatory frameworks, support in discussions with the local water authority regarding the necessary permits.
  • Preliminary planning and risk assessment: recommendations for further actions, including the necessary technical planning and coordination with the relevant authorities.
